The anticipation builds. It’s 11:55 am. I’ve tried to concentrate during the morning at work. Demands have called my name and distracted my mind for a bit. But as it nears lunch time, focus is almost impossible. I watch the clock, that seems to move so slow! No, I’m not done for the day at noon. I’m about to meet a friend for lunch at a new restaurant in town, and my anticipation grows due to this one simple fact- I love food. New foods that I’ve never had before, new restaurants in particular. When we are going on vacation, I try to plan something for everyone to enjoy. Something active for the kids, something historically interesting for my husband and my mom, and for me… well… can you guess? Yes, I go on vacation for the food! I try to find an interesting restaurant where ever we go. For my birthday, skip the gifts, just take me out somewhere to eat that I wouldn’t normally go, I just want the food. When I decide to really indulge in things that I shouldn’t have, I do try to work out extra hard at the gym. But, no matter what it is, something healthy, more indulgent, an ethnic food, or just burgers on the grill, I love food. Ok, now that you fully understand, hold that thought for a moment.
Lately I’ve been pondering that I need to blog more, But it’s difficult to be as consistent about getting a recipe done for my blog, as I’d like to be. So I lay in bed at night. My mind races. What can I blog about? Well, what’s better to blog about than your passion. That’s when I began to consider mindfulness. Mindful what? For some, this is a new buzz word. For others a completely foreign word. But essentially it means to be in the moment. Not to have your mind ahead of where you are in the day (I’m NOT good at this when I’m anticipating a tantalizing lunch), not to have your mind in the past, but to be in the present, Right where you are!
I have considered that mindfulness comes through the senses. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the clouds in the sky. I’m lucky that I don’t run into the car in front of me some days as I’m watching the sky.
Hugs, I LOVE LOVE LOVE hugs from my husband, from my son, my step daughters, my mom, from a friend. I So enjoy smells… well most smells. One of my beliefs in life is that you can NEVER have enough Bath and Body works. I just truly enjoy each and every smell.
Hearing. Anyone that knows me very well knows one of my favorite places in life to be is in my car, with the music up and the windows down. It’s an overload for my senses!
Of course lastly Taste. I have too many favorites to even begin to mention.
How often though do we rush through life not noticing the beauty that calls to our senses at every turn? I know I do, and I miss what’s right in front of me. I miss mindfulness, I miss opportunity for gratitude of the beautiful. I miss out on gifts from God. So…. I want to encourage you (I’m saying this to myself as I’m writing to you) to take a moment today to practice mindfulness. Eat dinner a little slower, savor the taste, drink that morning cup of coffee a little slower and enjoy the taste as it hits your tongue, take a moment to enjoy the view out your kitchen window as you cook or do dishes, maybe play a favorite song as you make dinner tonight, as the sauce simmers take a moment to go hug someone in your house. You may find some beauty that’s right in front of you just waiting to be discovered.
I’m going to go make coffee now, and notice the smell of it brewing, calling to me. I’m going to drink it a little slower and take a moment to appreciate the gifts in front of me.
